Steroid Shots
I got my last round of steroid shots this weekend without any side effects! By next Sunday the girls lungs should be matured by two weeks. So if they are born at 28 weeks they should have the lung capacity of 30 week old babies.

Optimistic
The doctor still thinks I have a good chance at reaching our 28 week goal! One doctor thinks I should be tested more frequently while the other thinks less frequently would be more of a benefit. All testing for this week has been canceled and just keeping our fingers crossed we sail through the week.
Right now the big risk is me getting an infection or Baby A's membranes rupturing. We have to wait another week to see their weights which is a bummer. It makes me feel better knowing they are getting bigger. My lungs, heart, and GERD tell me they are. I think I might need to be put on oxygen in a couple weeks. (She is kidding!)
And the adult respiratory therapist... |
It's Tony. I told the nurse I think I needed a wheelchair if we were going up there and fortunately we only saw two little ones at around 2 pounds because I would have lost it completely if I saw a third. It's an exercise in frustration when the health practitioners, all well meaning, tell you to get to 28 weeks because good things happen, but there is nothing more you can really do as a woman and certainly little you can do as a husband. So, coupled with a feeling of general helplessness, it was tough to see those little ones. After a while, a bunch of hours and a swim I took a lesson home, which was that the little guys were alive and that's very important. So, if I have to, I have not problem putting Mindy on her head if we need to. With my Hispanic last name you might notice my previous experience in such matters in the picture below:
Gotta be pretty skilled to wear an outfit that loud! |
But the nurses on the neonatal floor seem super nice and I'm sure I will be seeing them often sharing my internet musings and bad jokes. The nurse said that the most stressful thing to hit a marriage is seeing your children in the neonatal intensive care unit. I can't say I'm stoked to find out, but I'm confident that with the support we've had from all of you guys that we can get through just about anything.

We too remember seeing that NICU and crying that night. We always said it is the best and worst place in the world. Those doctors and nurses are amazing and you will hopefully find a couple nurses that you really connect with and trust them with your three babes when you cannot be there. Hang in there! GO MINDY GO! We are working on our list of things that Mindy requested. Hopefully we will get it to you in the nest couple of days!!
