Feeds, A Big Girl Bed and Our First YouTube Videos

Today the doctor approved Rianne and Teagan to start breastfeeding. Brielle had a spell last night so she got left out. With the help of a nipple shield Teagan latched on and was able to swallow a few mLs without dropping her heart rate which is huge for preemies! The nurse and doctor were impressed. Rianne latched on and then hung out. She was super tired today so we'll hope she does a little better tomorrow.

Rianne was moved to a crib today! It will be interesting to see how she responds to the light and increased stimulus. She can be very touchy and we have learned that the girls sometimes just want to be left alone.

Big Girl Bed!

Wonder if Teagan will freak out that her sister disappeared!
Maybe we need a crib quilt....

Our first try at videos...it's taken from the point-of-view just above Brielle as she is kangarooing with me (Tony) ...she makes a lot of noise for a 2 month old!

A big step forward ... anxiously hoping for an amazing week of progress

The girls were all switched from the vapotherm to 1/2 liter of wall oxygen on Monday.  So far they are loving it.  Tony and I can't get over how quiet the room has been since the change.
http://bgpunsher.files.wordpress.com/2010/07/tent-city.jpg
Their room still looks like a tent city!

They are not quite out of their modules yet...
No more vapotherm machines!

Their new room is a little cramped... but feels a bit bigger now!

Since they are doing well on the lower oxygen requirement they get to try and start eating by mouth this week.

Tony, always trying to increase efficiency, has set up "devices" to feed them...

With so much attention on getting the girls clothes I though that getting Mindy a couple t-shirts would be awesome...

Do I need a caption for a t-shirt with a caption?

Not to be confused with Nip/Tuck the cable TV show...

Or to pharmacists...it's baby formula, not Coumadin...

For those of you who obsessively check our blog for updates and find there isn't one i.e. Brianne, whose name is a combination of all of our girls names ... BRIelle teagAN rianNE and one of our nicest and sweetest blogpost fans,  this is the week for you.

If all goes well we will have something new to report at least a few times this week.

The girls seven week old stats are...

Rianne 3 pounds 14.5 ounces and 16.1 inches long.
Teagan 3 pounds 11 ounces and 15.4 inches long.
Brielle 3 pounds 7 ounces and 14.8 inches long.

Brielle not quite in downward dog...

The opposite of Power Yoga...I'll hold you in the pose yoga?

Brielle Burrito

She's the smallest but is getting so big.
Rianne likes to stick her tongue out.

The glare will be gone soon... once they are in big baby beds.

Ri was so tired she actually was keeping her hands still.
Teagan looking so cuddly.

Teagan's face has filled out so much this week.

Week 34 - The Painful Plateau

Mindy: The girls did not appreciate their daily Starbucks (caffeine) being taken away.  Teagan and Brielle's oxygen support had to be increased, and all of the girls spells increased a bit.  By the end of the week the spells decreased but their oxygen saturation still fluctuates a lot.  We are hoping and praying that over this next week their breathing becomes more stable.  Their oxygen requirements are all too high to start bottle feeding so we can't move forward until they can breathe easier.

Rianne weighs 3 pounds 10 ounces, Teagan weighs 3 pounds 8 ounces, and Brielle weighs 3 pounds 5 ounces.  We are close to having four pound babies!

Why worry about grams and ounces?

Tony: I guess there's some kind of expectation of improvement each week where weight, breathing and every function moves forward. However, we've found it is really two steps forward one step back as much as it is a little improvement, then a plateau, a big improvement, then a small dip, then another plateau. While the DMACC Bears XC team (I'm the volunteer coach) made history (placing 2nd in the regional meet) on a very hilly course yesterday...it's a roller coaster ride that is tough on parents. It really is no different than training for a 5K where times just won't go below 22 minutes then 21 minutes...then, my plateau, 20 minutes...

I've found it nice to be able to read other people's blogs that are behind us chronologically, someone still in pregnancy, our good friend Dawn Takekawa

and ahead, Mindy's sister Megan's blog of her girl Ellie

Everyone's got challenges, they just change...I don't think I will get to be a sahd (Stay at Home Dad) ... I know I won't get to be a sahd...

Our version of the fist bump...

Ooops...it was our version of "pull my finger"....

Ri, what do you think about our football fantasy picks?

I have a question...when am I going to get this fricking tape off of my face?

This diaper, it seems...warm....

Positioning is everything...if milk came from that nipple...

The no milk from daddy sad face...

Angelic...well, bald angel...

God bless mommy and daddy and my sisters and the Baltimore Ravens as they open at home vs. the Pittsburgh Steelers

Some kids have Teddy Bears, Brielle travels with her Binkie....

I call this image "Greenhouse"

I can't really use my hands this well, my parents just put my hand here to make it look like I'm really coordinated...

I'm almost "this many" pounds...

Infant Euphoria...

It's so chilly, I will wrap myself in children and blankets...

You know, you really should be holding your pacifier in on your own, I feel like I'm not empowering you...

Apparently chest hair is not "snuggly"

If I could get both fingers up my nose...I might be able to get this boogie out...

Maybe I can just slip this finger past the cannula...

See, when there's just one of us we can sleep so peacefully!
There is another set of triplets being delivered soon that requires more room, so the girls have been moved to a different room.  The nurse said it is crowded but once they can be in cribs the room won't seem so small. It could be worse, we could be sharing a room with another family...that is really tough I think...

Withdrawing their caffeine

 Caffeine, really?

The girls daily dose of caffeine is being stopped today.
Need I say more?

They were given caffeine to help stimulate their brains to remind them to breathe, although one of the side effects is a little less weight gain.  Hopefully the girls tolerate the change and we can continue to move forward.  If Rianne and Brielle don't have an increase in their spells, they will be changed from the vapotherm to the blended nasal cannula at the end of the week which will be awesome. It will clear the room a little more for what will hopefully be some cribs soon!

Yeah!

On Sunday we got to help give Brielle and Rianne baths.  Brielle was a fan and laid quietly and sucked on her pacifier.  Rianne wouldn't lay still so I'm not sure how clean she actually got.

Brielle weighs 3 pounds 1 ounce and is 14.6 inches long.

I've been really congested so this tube takes the boogies from my nose...

You wanna hope they don't poop in the bath...but precautions are necessary...

So I missed my mouth with my Binkie...

Teagan weighs 3 pounds 4 ounces and is 14.6 inches long.
(Teagan) Guess who changed me?

Dad, seriously, get this thing off my head (Teague, I can't...the nurse has to remove your oxygen lines first...)

(Teagan) That bottle looks delicious!

Rianne weighs 3 pounds 6 ounces and is 15.2 inches long.
(Ri) One day my head will be bigger than my pacifier!

(Ri) This Binkie is amazing!

Rianne rips out her canula and G-tube...

...lift my arms out wide, I open my eyes...and now all I want to see is a a sky full of lighters...a sky full of lighters...
They are still so tiny!

Our little monkey Ri isticking her tongue out
Someone else's little monkey sticking her tongue out

Watch, I can keep my right eye looking forward and freak you out by turning my left eye here!

No I got her...just let me move the green tube here, the clear tube there, get her through the red wire...

So cute...

So frickin' cute...
