Barefoot and pregnant is good for your back and "Growing Pains" isn't just an 80's sitcom.

So I'm reading (audiobook) "Born to Run" by  Christopher McDougall and it's about - running. What in the world does running have to do with pregnancy? In this book he talks about barefoot running and how, as a species, we are made to run and that the shoes we wear are hurting us?

McDougall cites statistics that 85% of runners get hurt each year and that the only indicator of who would or not be more likely to be hurt is the price of the shoes. The more expensive the shoe, the more likely the injury! Why?

Because your foot can't strengthen when the support is all there. In the same way it would might make more sense for a woman, who is pregnant walk around barefoot . . . . but not necessarily in the home, rather, walking in the dewy grass so the foot has to grab, move and otherwise re-learn to support a body that is changing its center of gravity daily.

Now, the Tarahumara are supposed to be the greatest distance runners in the world and we're not talking short distances like marathons, we're talking ultra marathon distances of 50 and 100 miles! Here's a pic and you'll notice those aren't Nike's, those are sandals.

Who is smiling after 50 miles?

Mindy's birthday is tomorrow and I know she loves shoes!

As the book goes on to talk about how humans can use persistence hunting to run down elk he makes the argument that women should have been in and following the hunting party, especially the ones who were pregnant and lactating because the people that need beef first are infants, pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding.

I won't even talk about getting passed by a pregnant woman at the Des Moines Marathon . . . so embarrassing.

Growing Pains

Yup, that's Leonardo Dicaprio on the right!

Speaking of the pregnant woman of the hour . . . The babies are growing which means Mindy is getting a lot bigger and it seems to happen once a week. One day she's one size and then, in classic Emeril fashion, Bam! She's bigger! (Oh yes, and there's a little more spicy to her too!)

Emeril's at about 20 weeks...

The nurse said she'll be growing a lot the next few weeks and she's mentioned a time or two that growing hurts! She'll double over with "growing pains" as her body tries to expand for the babies and with three construction workers expanding the work zone, it's really brutal on her.She can no longer pull her size 0 pants past her knees as her thighs and hips have become more "muscular" to carry the extra weight.

I know what you're thinking . . . oh, cry me a freaking river, she can't put on her size zero pants, so does being pregnant mean she goes from shopping at Gap Kids to the regular Gap?

No, silly, she can't fit into clothes because clothes are not meant for someone who is expanding exponentially in the things, belly and breasts but not in the lower legs, arms and . . . well, no her head isn't much bigger either.

The babies weighed 5 ounces each at our appointment on the 22nd.  Mindy read that a singleton baby is about 3.5 ounces and 4.5 inches at 16 weeks. Good thing the triplets are ahead of schedule since they will be born 5 weeks earlier than a singleton.  Her cervix was a little shorter than we would like (3.7) so she has to back to the doctor for a recheck in 2 weeks not 4 :(  Hopefully everything checks out good then. Otherwise Ms. Cervix meet Mr. Stitch . . . sounds painful!

Mindy said the exam was a vaginal ultrasound. not the manual that that she thought it would be, so she could handle doing as many as she needs to. I'll repeat that she's excited to go to the doctor! How can this be? Well, if you saw the size of the "instrument" that is used for that particular procedure, you would understand why she doesn't mind!  I guess my work is done . . .

Joy, Megan, Ellie and Kinzie . . . and Mindy's back is arched a bit from that procedure we talked about earlier

My wife or is it . . .

Ok here's a little log info from Mindy's diary. . . feels so much like Doogie Howser's computer log. . . the original blogger!

"I'm feeling better and have a bit more energy.  I still don't push it and try to just work, eat, and sleep.  My bedtime is still 8:30 or 9:00 on a good day.  These babies must like to sleep as much as their mom and dad! More daddy and his siestas! I am an expert at snoring.  Apparently pregnant women produce more mucous than the average person to help ward off infections.  I thought at first I had allergies but turns out I just have more snot then before. I told Tony to poke me or tell me to roll over, but apparently that just makes me snore louder.  So most nights I find Tony in the spare bedroom or on the couch.  Sorry honey!

I have gained a total of 14.5 pounds so far.  The nurse practitioner seemed satisfied with my weight gain so I'm going to keep doing what I have been doing.

I've started working on the nursery at little more since we found out two are girls.  The walls are a silver/gray with a blueish tone.  Our cribs and dresser are white, and I plan on doing solid sheet sets.  I found a pink, purple, and blue set that I think will look nice with the room, but I also think yellow would like good.  So many decisions to make at once with three on the way. My friend Mallory can't make it up Relays weekend and so I had to promise her that she could still help decorate.  (Does she not remember that I am challenged in the decorating department and will take all the help I can get)?  I am so very thankful for all the help my friends and family have been.  I can't imagine getting through this without them."

No News is Good News, I Guess

It was a really strange feeling today at the appointment. It was neither happiness, nor sadness, just more forensic than anything else. Spine is strong and long. Check. Kidneys are cranking out pee into the amniotic fluid. Check. Four appendages. Check. It reminded me of Gary Gnu's "No gnus is good gnus with Gary gnu." I found a clip on YouTube

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAwVIZDAUF0

and right down that 70's road to The Great Space Coaster which is kind of creepy now that I look at it . . .

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JIYJVW-gPnY

We found out that we probably have two girls and baby C, did not cooperate so we don't know what gender he/she is.

So, the wait is on for another 4 weeks.

From my perspective, here on the couch until Mindy asks me to get her something, it's just wait and worry . . . Should we be excited everything is healthy? Yeah, you betcha! But I guess getting a big fat TO BE CONTINUED on the gender was a little like door number 3, well, the lock is broken and we can't see what's behind it, so . . . come back in 4 weeks and we'll let you know what prize you get . . .

Each time we go in, it's like . . . well, the next week's results are the important ones . . . and I guess there's a truth to that . . . next month is the level 2 sonogram where we spend two hours finding out if all of the anatomy is normal . . . right at about 20.5 or 21 weeks . . . so as soon as we walk into an appointment it's like, this one isn't important, it's the next one which is 3 or 4 weeks closer  . . . until the big Week 35, which we hope comes without incident . . .

You can tell there's a hope that there's a boy in there from Mindy and to be grandpa, but, I could care less about gender and worry most about health . . . although, the gender is my fault I suppose chromosomally speaking, and I'm to blame/laud for what I've done. I'm sure my girls will simply read in a corner quietly while dad watches his football. Needless to say, my mom, with 39 years of boys under her belt is ecstatic!

As a guy I feel and I've read we need something tangible, because we don't feel the kicks.  I guess I just want to meet them and have them wrap their fingers around mine. I've written a 3,000 word story for a creative writing class about how it felt waiting each time for the results and I don't know if I'm comfortable sharing online. It seems that throughout the centuries guys have agreed to answer every "what's on your mind?" question with a "nothing" or a grunt. I don't want to break the code.

Dunno. I guess I'm just darn impatient. I'm sure when things get crazy I'll want to put them back in Mindy's belly, though. . . . the thought of 4 girls and me in this house . . . well, it's a good thing I can take a shower over at the YMCA a mile down the road. The thought of 3 girls and 2 boys, well, it seems in a democracy, that's not really all that much better!

I'm rambling . . . I know weeks 16 to 35 will go by in a blink and I'll be wishing for the days when I just rubbed Mindy's belly, kissed all 4 good night, rolled over and went to sleep.

Waiting to Meet Them - boys or girls or both?

What's up with the Weight Gain, or Lack of it?
Week 14 down, hopefully ... hopefully 2/5 of the way there and 21 weeks to go!

It's my birthday coming up but somebody ate the cake!

I mean the whole cake!

Mindy thought for sure she'd been packing on the pounds this week as her appetite grew, but she picked up only 0.5 pounds this week.  How does someone who can eats a large porkchop, a twice baked potato,5 stuffed mushrooms, a good amount of asparagus, and a bowl of ice-cream an hour later not gain weight while I look at the same meal and pick up 3 pounds?

I suggested we contact the Biggest Loser contestants and ask what they were eating before they got on the show. They refused to talk to me, they were eating, but that's okay, I've done my research and put together a list from acaloriecounter.com to help with the daily menu.  (I'm not really expecting Mindy to eat this, but these numbers are nuts...gotta fry it or freeze it to pack on calories!)

The big problem around here is that the top four on the list

1. White Castle Large Chocolate Shake 1680 calories,
2. Nathan's Fish and Chips 1537 calories,
3. Carl's Jr Double Six Dollar Burger 1520 Calories and
4. Hardees Monster Thickburger 1420 calories

are just not available but here's a breakfast, lunch, dinner combination that will put Mindy and the kids on a heart monitor for sure. ...surprisingly, it's a lot easier to fatten up at the Dairy Queen, Sonic and Subway than McDonalds!

For breakfast, why not try that

McDonalds Deluxe Breakfast 1140 calories

Not a bad start, but hardly going to pack on the pounds.

How about a visit to DQ for lunch!

Wash down a six piece Chicken Strip Basket at 1270 calories with a Dairy Queen Large Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Blizzard at 1320 calories and we've got 2590 calories in just one meal!

Can I top that for dinner? You betcha!

How about stopping by for something healthy at Subway, a double meatball marinara sub at 860 calories and a trip to sonic for an M&M chocolate blast for 900 calories?

And Taco Bell's fourth meal, don't forget a nice snack before bed!

A Nachos Bell Grande at 770 calories gets us over 6000!

That sounds disgusting! So, seriously, I'm putting it out to you guys, anyone have any ideas on packing on a couple of pounds without sending 3 kids and mom to the cardiologist?

Painting the Kid's Room
Mindy: Thanks to my friend Dawn's mom our nursery is being painted this weekend!  I can't wait to see how it looks and be one step closer to getting the nursery done.  Next it will be time to clean the carpets and put the cribs and dresser together.  Thank goodness my more interior decorating savvy friends are coming soon to help hang things on the walls, pick out bedding, and find some curtains.

The Multiples Class

We got to tour the NICU, nursery, labor and delivery rooms, OR, and recovery rooms.  It was nice to see where we would be spending time this fall and they mentioned that parents usually stay there 24/7...I'm not sure how making a hospital into our own little Embassy Suites fits into our lives but I gotta say, they've got hot tubs in the birthing rooms!...everyone was really friendly there and we're getting to know some of the other couples, especially the couple with triplets.

Mindy struggled to keep it together as we saw all of the pictures of NICU babies as small as 14 oz. A McDonalds Milkshake is not supposed to be bigger than your kid! No one asked the question...though I don't think it would be appropriate...how many kids don't graduate from the NICU?

Mindy was pretty well inspired to make it to week 35.  The told us during the tour that if the babies are born before week 34 they will go to the NICU automatically so we're really trying to go further...but seriously, how am I going to assist in maintaining Mindy's cervical competence?

It's my 39th birthday Sunday and it's just a year from 40 and running the Masters 800 in the Drake relays. I think it would be cool to have my kids watching me run on that track, and with how fast I'll run, happier that kids don't remember anything before they are 5.
I'm not a slug, I've got a back massager under me and Mindy wanted me to blow out the candles right now and I refused to get off my back massager which felt really good, so yes, that's a 15 week pregnant woman bringing the cake to me...one candle from each of them...

On Friday we find out what gender they are going to be hopefully with the 4D
April 22nd is coming soon!  We are excited to see our babies again and learn how many boys and girls we will be having.  If you want to take make a wager put your prediction in the comments, right now odds are pushing towards 2 girls and a boy.

14 weeks - Big Belly, Pound for Pound Math and Multiples Classes

Bam! Big Belly!

Our babies have grown from lentils to figs to shrimp to lemons. In a singleton pregnancy that is not too noticeable, but with three lemons, I seem to be getting much bigger! To help contrast the 13.5 weeks I put a pic of my 9.5 weeks image...

13.5 weeks

13.5 weeks

Activities of Daily Living - Ugh!

I have more energy and feel that I can enjoy time between work and sleep now with Tony, but as soon as I do something, I get really tired really quickly. It's like every time I try something, I'm walking up a hill.

I tried to clean last weekend and I learned that I don't have that kind of energy, so I asked my wonderful mother to come this weekend and she vacuumed the house for us.

I still have days where the pressure is pretty intense and I try to sit as much as I can at work and that helps a lot.  One of the maintenance men told me he was making me a stool with a motor so I could move throughout the whole pharmacy without standing. (This sounds a lot like the mailman or milkman!...Tony)  I keep waiting for the stool to magically appear.

Pound for Pound Math

I gained 4 pounds last week! Time for Tony and his math...

I'm supposed to gain 60 pounds total, I'm up to 13 pounds of total weight gain and have a goal to get to week 35.

Week 35 - Week 14 = 21 Weeks to go.

60 Pounds - 13 Pounds = 47 Pounds to go.

47 pounds to go/21 Weeks to go = 2.23 pounds per week I need to gain.

Birthing Classes!

We started our classes at the hospital.  We don't have to take the birthing classes because I'm C section bound, so we are taking the Multiple Blessings class at Mercy Hospital.

We'd give you the link but our first class was not very exciting, all lecture and Powerpoints that could have been posted or we could have read ourselves. The instructor seems nice, and had some personal stories about her experiences, but I guess our expectation was to interact with other couples. It was 105 minutes of face front lecture.

The next class starts with a movie and tour, but just FYI, the movie is before the class extending it even further, so it goes from 2 hours to 2:15 or 2:30 depending on the day, so make sure you plan for all of that time.

There's one couple in there from Ames so that's a 4 hour commitment for them with commute!

There were 9 couples with twins and another couple expecting triplets 5 weeks before us.

We hope to talk to them more the next few classes to see if they have any insightful information.

Sorry about the downer ending, it's just as we get closer to term, we really value time more...any thoughts you guys have on classes and such would be awesome!

Things I've leaned since being pregnant

1. Maternity pants are not that comfortable.

2. Finding underwear that fits right is not easy.  If you get a size bigger it's too big in the butt.  I might have to stick to thongs. (Sweet!, that's Tony talking...)

3. Having good friends and family are a must to make it through.

4. Having supportive co-workers makes the process so much easier.  Thanks guys!

5. Tony has become very protective and more amazing then ever. (Sweet, again!)

6. If you are one of the luck ones who gets bad acne (me) there are no safe treatment options.  I'm hoping this means I'm going to have great skin afterwords

7. Sneezing hurts really bad the first few months.

8. At 24 weeks I'll look like a singleton mom at 36 weeks.  Yikes.

9. The babies are viable at 22 weeks.

10. There is a high likelihood that I'll have my cervix stitched shut.  I hear this is painful :(

11.  It is really hard to eat every 2-3 hours.  Thanks to all my coworkers for reminding me to stuff my face.

12.  Gaining weight is not as easy as I thought it would be.

13.  I'll never know what the birthing process is like since I'll be having a C-section.  No birthing classes for us.  We will be attending a class on multiples instead.

14.  Tylenol does not help when I have a headache.  I was prescribed Fioricet instead.

15. It is possible to be hot.  (For those of you who know me know that I'm always cold and have feet and hands like ice thanks to Raynaud's phenomenon).

Food, Farts and Funny Questions

So Mindy can eat again and that's exciting, while I'm training for Dam to Dam...just like a wrestler going to a buffet that he pays $19.95 for and has a water and a leaf of lettuce. We've been so good about keeping bad food out of the house while she was nauseous, now I'm accosted by peanut M&M's, Ice Cream, Sherbert, Brats, Potatoes, Asparagus, and oh, how about some biscuits...in one meal? They're wheat biscuits so that's a a healthy 20 grams of fat...

Mindy has pregnant brain telling me that I spelled biscuit wrong, there's a k in there...will our little boy (if we have one) be another Dan "Potatoe" Quayle?

She's claiming that she's eating for the babies...eating every 2 hours as she gets hungry again...when she's got three kids and two breasts I guarantee that she won't be encouraging the kiddos to eat every two hours because it's healthier...

Different people and age groups have different reactions to our news and her very cool 7th grade youth group had some awesome questions for her: I thought it would be cool to answer the rhetorical questions...

*** [Since you are having three] can I keep one? We'll let the kids know that at any time a 7th grader could take them away if they don't behave and see how that goes...
*** Can we come to your baby shower? Of course, we've got lots of babies and need lots of presents!
*** Can we come visit you in the hospital? Of course, you can see the kids in order of how much we liked your present!
*** When are you going to get fat? I call that a complisult (an insulting compliment, kind of like saying, oh, look, you're not fat anymore...) By saying when are you going to get fat they are acknowledging that she is not fat now...compliment!...but will expand to ... well, I'm no dummy here, honey, just more of you to love!!!

*** Can you wear a tighter shirt next week so we can see your belly? Tighter shirts are for the more mature husband (wink, wink) to enjoy the pregnancy, don't you worry, there's going to be a point in August when she'll think 80's half shirt should make a comeback...and the poor husband may see that going on around the house...

*** Are you going to be teaching us next year?  Mindy said that she was sad because she thought she might not be back, but seriously, Mindy, would you like to spend some time away from your 3 kids one evening a week so you can instill your wisdom into a group of 8th graders who love you so much...your husband would be the best ever if he would just watch them for that little while...it's good too, because tweens and teenagers know everything and we're going to have lots of questions...

To show my appreciation to the pharmacists I work with for what they have in store for them Tony and I are taking them to dinner, well, Mindy's paying for dinner while Tony, Greg and Teresa enjoy some final four action at our new bar Sports Page straight from Indianola...again, to the 8th graders, Daddy and Mommy, individually, and maybe even together, will need a little time away...so I'm sure it will all work out...a lot.

Mindy says Greg and Teresa are rock stars, and they have been, now, Mindy's been a little gassy which is fine here on the home front where she can go "excuse herself" to another room or ask when only she and I are on the couch, "do you smell something?" Well, I'm just letting you know that that little box of a pharmacy is going to need a glade plug in or two. She is adamant they don't smell...please see the k in bisket up top... Mindy did mention that, on a rare occasion, I have ripped one, let's just say that I no longer sleep with my back to her front. I laughed so hard after that monster that it solidified us as a couple that is very "comfortable" with each other...
